Can Invisalign Fix Overbite

March 9, 2023

An overbite is a tooth misalignment that is characterized by the upper jaw overlapping the lower. There are two types of overbite:

  • Skeletal: typically genetic, due to the size, shape, and position of the teeth and jaw
  • Dental: typically the result of childhood habits due to the position of the teeth

While a slight overbite is natural, not addressing it can result in a variety of complications, such as:

  • Increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
  • Issues with chewing, speaking and swallowing
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Low self-esteem

At Cambridge Dental in Brick, New Jersey, we offer orthodontic solutions for resolving your mild to moderate overbite, including Invisalign.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign was introduced to the market in 1998 as an alternative to traditional metal braces for resolving mild to moderate malocclusions, including overbite. This is a series of clear aligners, much like retainers. They are custom-made to fit snugly against the teeth, putting firm pressure to gradually shift teeth into their appropriate position within the jaw.

There are two reasons Invisalign is such a popular method for treating mild to moderate malocclusions:

  1. They are transparent, meaning most people won’t know you have them in.
  2. They are removable, meaning you can take them out to eat/drink and brush/floss your teeth.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Treatment time depends on the type and severity of your overbite, as well as your commitment to wearing the aligners. For best results, the aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day.

Each set of aligners moves the teeth up to 0.25 mm, and you will be instructed to switch to a new set every 1 to 3 weeks based on the severity of your overbite. Every few weeks, you’ll need to visit the office so that we can monitor your progress. If you are not progressing as expected, we can make modifications to your treatment plan to get you where you want to be.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost of your Invisalign treatment depends on the type and severity of your malocclusion, which determines the number of aligners you need. Treatment starts at around $1,200 for up to 5 aligners and goes up to $8,000 for unlimited aligners.

The good news is many dental insurance providers will cover a portion of treatment with Invisalign. Our friendly office staff will be happy to work with your provider to determine your coverage. If you do not have coverage or your provider does not cover treatment with Invisalign, we do offer some financing options.
