Bone Grafting / Sinus Lift

What is Bone Grafting?

The bone grafting procedure is often a major part of dental restorations, such as bridge work or dental implants. In the majority of cases, the success of a restorative procedure depends on the height, depth, and width of the jawbone at the site of the implants.
When the jawbone shrinks due to a lack of support from natural tooth roots or sustains significant damage, you are left with an unstable foundation. Thus, bone grafting is often recommended for the ensuing a successful restoration. If you are looking for a dentist skilled at providing a bone graft in Brick, NJ, the team from Cambridge Dental Group is here for you.

Causes for Jaw Bone Volume Shrinkage

It can affect and permanently damage the jaw bone that supports your teeth. Affected areas progressively diminish until the teeth become unstable and are likely to fall out.
Studies show that patients who have experienced a tooth extraction subsequently lose 40-60% of the bone at the extraction site during the next three years. This loss of bone structure results in what is called a “bone defect.”
Dental injuries and other trauma resulting from a blow to the jaw, as well as bacterial infection, can cause your jaw bone to recede.
All of these issues can prevent you from being a candidate for dental implants. Fortunately, bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure. The additional bone is obtained either from a dental tissue bank or from your own jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee).
At our dental office, we also perform sinus bone grafts to replace lost bone in the back upper jaw.

Sinus Lift (Graft)

The sinus lift is a surgical procedure, which can increase the amount bone tissue of the upper jaw, above the molars and premolars.

The maxillary sinuses are behind your cheeks and on top of the upper teeth, resembling rooms that have nothing in them. Some of the roots of the natural upper teeth extend up into these sinuses. When the upper teeth are removed, there is often a thin wall of bone separating the maxillary sinus and the mouth. Dental implants need adequate bone to hold them in place, yet when the sinus wall is very thin, it is impossible to place and secure the implants.

To address this problem, our dentist enters the sinus from where the upper teeth once were. The sinus membrane is then lifted upward, and donor bone is inserted into the floor of the sinus. After healing, the bone becomes part of your jaw and dental implants can be inserted and stabilized.

If enough bone between the upper jaw ridge and the bottom of the sinus is available to stabilize the implant well, a sinus lift and implant placement can sometimes be performed as a single procedure. If that is not the case, the sinus lift must be performed first and the bone will have to mature for several months, depending upon the type of material used. Once the graft has matured, the implants can be placed.
